The History of Wicca from the "It's NEW" Veiwpoint
Wicca was said to have started when it finally came out of the secrecy of the covens. When entering a coven, you were sworn to secrecy, and this guy, Gerald Gardner, broke that promise. He published a book on his religion, and thus begane the beggining of Wicca. More and more people got interested, and soon we have the New Age religion.

Short and sweet huh?

Wicca from the "It's the oldest religion on Earth!" Viewpoint
Archeologists have found a lot of Goddess statues, the oldest one probably being the Venus statue. Well, anyways, there have been a lot of eveidence of Goddess worshipping, and how they were runned by High Priestesses. Well, anyways, the Roman Catholic Church came about, and started to destroy the religion (like using the God who had horns, calling him Satan and evil), incooperate the old religion (like Easter AKA Ostra), and basically trying to kick the Religion of Old out of there. Eventually, they succeded, but people still practiced in the safty and secrecy of their own homes, no longer in the open, no longer being able to heal or be midwives. Well, after centuries of hiding, Gerald Gardner came out and told everyone about this old religion. This time became known as the Reawakening of the Religion of Old.

Long history, huh? Pre-dating Christianity by at least 3000 years.

"It's as old as you are" Viewpoint
Other will argue that Wicca is as old as the person who practices it. No two people believe in the same thing, and no two people practice it the same way, even if they are in the same coven. So, as long as you practice it, that's how old Wicca is.

My own Views on each of these and how old I think Wicca is
The "It's brand new!" viewpoint doesn't really make sence to me, considering how old is the coven Mr. Gernald joined? It cannot be told how far it goes back, so the religion was there, just in hiding. With the "It's as old as we are" also doesn't really make sence, because yes, no two people do think alike, but they both have the same morals as the next Wiccan, and they follow the two Wiccan laws. I do agree with the "It's the Oldest!" because I have read many books about the archeological Goddess, the historical Goddess. Of course, those old traditions have been lost in the Christian destrcution, but the basic beliefs live on. "Wicca", the word itself, is new, but the beliefs are not. "Wicca" came about from "Witchcraft" because of all of the bad hype on witchcraft, even though most Wiccans do use the Craft. I personally think Wicca pre-dates Christianity, and any other religion.
